THE LAST SAMURAI: THE LIFE AND BATTLES OF SAIGO TAKAMORI
Fecha Lanzamiento: 30/04/2004
MARK RAVINA
JOHN WILEY & SONS INC, 2004

Resumen del libro

The dramatic arc of Saigo Takamori's life, from his humble origins as a lowly samurai, to national leadership, to his death as a rebel leader, has captivated generations of Japanese readers and now Americans as well - his life is the inspiration for a major Hollywood film, The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise and Ken Watan abe. In this vibrant new biography, Mark Ravina, professor of history and Director of East Asian Studies at Emory University, explores the facts behind Hollywood storytelling and Japanese legends, and explains the passion and poignancy of Saigo's life. Known both for his scholarly research and his appearances on The History Channel, Ravina recreates the world in which Saigo lived and died, the last days of the samurai. The Last Samurai traces Saigo's life from his early days as a tax clerk in far southwestern Japan, through his rise to national prominence as a fierce imperial loyalist. Saigo was twice exiled for his political activities -- sent to Japan's remote southwestern islands where he fully expected to die. But exile only increased his reputation for loyalty, and in 1864 he was brought back to the capital to help his lord fight for the restoration of the emperor. In 1868, Saigo commanded his lord's forces in the battles which toppled the shogunate and he became and leader in the emperor Meiji's new government. But Saigo found only anguish in national leadership. He understood the need for a modern conscript army but longed for the days of the traditional warrior. Saigo hoped to die in service to the emperor. In 1873, he sought appointment as envoy to Korea, where he planned to demand that the Korean king show deference to the Japanese emperor, drawing his sword, if necessary, top defend imperial honor. Denied this chance to show his courage and loyalty, he retreated to his homeland and spent his last years as a schoolteacher, training samurai boys in frugality, honesty, and courage. In 1876, when the government stripped samurai of their swords, Saigo's followers rose in rebellion and Saigo became their reluctant leader. His insurrection became the bloodiest war Japan had seen in centuries, killing over 12,000 men on both sides and nearly bankrupting the new imperial government. The imperial government denounced Saigo as a rebel and a traitor, but their propaganda could not overcome his fame and in 1889, twelve years after his death, the gov ... Leer resumen completo

OUR AMERICA: A HISPANIC HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES
Fecha Lanzamiento: 11/03/2014
NORTON (W.W.), 2014

Resumen del libro

An eminent scholar finds a new American history in the Hispanic past of our diverse nation. The United States is still typically conceived of as an offshoot of England, with our history unfolding east to west beginning with the first English settlers in Jamestown. This view overlooks the significance of Americas Hispanic pas t. With the profile of the United States increasingly Hispanic, the importance of recovering the Hispanic dimension to our national story has never been greater. This absorbing narrative begins with the explorers and conquistadores who planted Spains first colonies in Puerto Rico, Florida, and the Southwest. Missionaries and rancheros carry Spains expansive impulse into the late eighteenth century, settling California, mapping the American interior to the Rockies, and charting the Pacific coast. During the nineteenth century Anglo-America expands west under the banner of Manifest Destiny and consolidates control through war with Mexico. In the Hispanic resurgence that follows, it is the peoples of Latin America who overspread the continent, from the Hispanic heartland in the West to major cities such as Chicago, Miami, New York, and Boston. The United States clearly has a Hispanic present and future. And here is its Hispanic past, presented with characteristic insight and wit by one of our greatest historians. ... Leer resumen completo

TROY: THE MITH AND REALITY BEHIND THE EPIC LEGEND
CARLTON BOOKS LIMITED, 2004

Resumen del libro

Troy is the city that gave birth to some of the greatest stories the Western world has ever heard. Troy digs deep into the history of the magnificent city, the myths and legends, the fate of treasures and of men and women, taking us up to the present day. For Troy is not only a place of myth, Troy existed. Homer's Illiad br ings all the strands of the story together with Priam, a king; Hector, his heroic son; the mighty warrior, Achilles, from whom Alexander the Great claimed descent; Patroclus, Achilles' dearest friend; Ulysses, the old trickster; Paris, Priam's other son; and finally, Agamemnon who led the besieging forces demanding the return of Helen, wife of Menelaeus. Schliemann, a German archaeologist, was obsessed with finding the fabled city. He unearthed the city of Troy that had vanished from the face of the earth. By skill, determination and fine detective work, Schliemann found the layers of one city after another lying under a mound on the shores of Asia, called Hissalrik. In this stunning, illustrated reference book, Nick McCarty retells the magnificent epic legend of the place and answers many questions. He also uncovers the archaeological history of Troy and the people involved in those discoveries. ... SOUTHEAST ASIA IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A READER
I.B.TAURIS, 1998

Resumen del libro

This reader provides a comprehensive study of 20th-century Southeast Asia from the beginning of the century to the present. It concentrates particularly on the formation and development of 20th-century nationalist movements in the region, examining their early organization during the zenith of European imperial control and their evolution during the formative period of anti-colonial activity. It traces the intense period of revolutionary upheaval after the Second World War, the anti-colonial wars and the prolonged period of bargaining over the creation of independent states. The region became a frontline in the global Cold War. At the time of the steadily escalating Vietnam war, many of the internal and regional conflicts in Southeast Asia were resolved, and political structures and economic agendas were established that have remained largely intact to the present day. ... ISLAND AT THE END OF THE WORLD: THE TURBULENT HISTORY OF EASTER I SLAND
REAKTION BOOKS, 2005

Resumen del libro

On a long stretch of green coast in the South Pacific, hundreds of enormous, impassive stone heads stand guard against the ravages of time, war, and disease that have attempted over the centuries to conquer Easter Island. Steven Roger Fischer offers the first English-language history of Easter Island in "Island at the End o f the World," a fascinating chronicle of adversity, triumph, and the enduring monumentality of the island's stone guards. A small canoe with Polynesians brought the first humans to Easter Island in 700 CE, and when boat travel in the South Pacific drastically decreased around 1500, the Easter Islanders were forced to adapt in order to survive their isolation. Adaptation, Fischer asserts, was a continuous thread in the life of Easter Island: the first European visitors, who viewed the awe-inspiring monolithic busts in 1722, set off hundreds of years of violent warfare, trade, and disease--from the smallpox, wars, and Great Death that decimated the island to the late nineteenth-century Catholic missionaries who tried to "save" it to a despotic Frenchman who declared sole claim of the island and was soon killed by the remaining 111 islanders. The rituals, leaders, and religions of the Easter Islanders evolved with all of these events, and Fischer is just as attentive to the island's cultural developments as he is to its foreign invasions. Bringing his history into the modern era, Fischer examines the colonization and annexation of Easter Island by Chile, including the Rapanui people's push for civil rights in 1964 and 1965, by which they gained full citizenship and freedom of movement on the island. As travel to and interest in the island rapidly expand, "Islandat the End of the World" is an essential history of this mysterious site. ... Leer resumen completo

REMEMBERING JACK
BULFINCH PRESS, 2003

Resumen del libro

Upon Jacque Lowe's death, commentators credited his pictures with creating the myth of Camelot. Lowe's photographs of the Kennedys, taken during his span as JFK's personal photographer, have become the iconic imagery of a time that remains vividly etched in the national psyche. Of Lowe's 40,000 photographs of the Kennedys, only a few hundred have ever been seen. Authorized by the Lowe estate, REMEMBERING JACK--which is being published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of JFK's death--features more than 600 pictures, half of which are previously unpublished. All of Lowe's original negatives were housed in a bank vault in the World Trade Center and were destroyed on 9/11/01. The book includes an introduction by Tom Wolfe, Lowe's friend and photo subject for 40 years. Hugh Sidey, who was traveling with Kennedy when he was assassinated, writes the commentary, while Thomasina Lowe chronicles her father's work and legacy. The focus, however, remains on the pictures--a poignant evocation of the charm, youth, high spirits, and legend of the Kennedys, all tinged with a sense of loss. ... Leer resumen completo

FIDEL CASTRO: BIOGRAPHY
POLITY PRESS, 2004

Resumen del libro

Fidel Castro is one of the most interesting and controversial personalities of our time - he has become a myth and an icon. He was the first Cuban Caudillo - the man who freed his country from dependence on the USA and who lead his people to rediscover their national identity and pride. Castro has outlived generations of Am erican presidents and Soviet leaders. He has survived countless assassination attempts by the CIA, the Mafia, and Cubans living in exile. He has become one of the greatest politicians of the 20th Century. His biography, and the history of his country exemplify the tensions between East and West, North and South, rich and poor. As Castro's life draws to a close, the question as to what will become of Cuba is more important that ever. Will Castro open Cuba to economic reform and democratization, or stick to his old slogan socialism or death? In this remarkable, up-to-date reconstruction of Castro's life, Volker Skierka addresses these questions and provides an account of the economic, social, and political history of Cuba since Castro's childhood. He draws on a number of little-known sources, including material from the East German communist archives on Cuba, which were until recently inaccessible. This is an exciting, painstakingly researched, and authortiative account of the life of one of the most extraordinary political figures of our time. ... Leer resumen completo

LONDON'S THAMES
JOHN MURRAY, 2004

Resumen del libro

Without the Thames there would be no London. From earliest times, the needs of the city - whether for stone, gold or coal, for hay to feed livestock or food, or wine and spices for human beings - were supplied from the river, as the fierce tides brought ships upstream or carried them down again. Only with the age of trunk r oad and rail did London s global importance as a port diminish. Even after that the tides continued to drive the great power stations. This fascinating book is the best possible introduction to the water and its ways, the buildings that line the banks, and the people who lived by the river, their customs and ancient knowledge. The Thames is here in every guise - highway and barrier, source of power and source of life, place of entertainment, port, and drainpipe. ... Leer resumen completo

TWILIGHT OF THE ROMANOVS: A PHOTOGRAPHIC ODYSSEY ACROSS IMPERIAL RUSSIA
THAMES AND HUDSON LTD, 2013

Resumen del libro

The lives of the tsars and their subjects from 1855 to 1918, told through rare archival photographs The Russian Empire was among the most mysterious of the world’s great powers, profoundly torn between a rural population living almost medieval lives and industrial and social change in the cities. The tsar’s giga ntic realm struggled with the advent of modernity and with its own internal contradictions between Asia and Europe, faith and science, different ethnic groups, and the divergent interests of the aristocracy, the middle classes, the urban workers, and the rural poor: a continent of contradictions from abject poverty to fairy-tale wealth captured by authors from Tolstoy to Chekhov, from Gogol to Gorky. Twilight of the Romanovs opens a door into the world of pre-revolutionary Russia using original photographs taken during the last decades of Romanov rule. They include remarkable color images created using an early three-color-plate technique that brings the remote past to life. Our companions on this journey include the Scottish photographer William Carrick, Americans George Kennan and Murray Howe, the German-Russian Carl Bulla, Sergey Produkin-Gorsky, and the writers Leonid Andreyev and Anton Chekhov, together with many anonymous others. These photographs are snapshots of a vanished world, yet they reveal a surprising continuity: despite the subsequent revolution, faces, buildings, and landscapes still resonate with those who see them a century and more later. 360 illustrations, 114 in color ... BRAZIL S MODERN ARCHITECTURE
PHAIDON PRESS LIMITED, 2004

Resumen del libro

In cultural terms, Brazil is famous for its music and its architecture. As the largest and richest country in Latin America, Brazil is set apart from the others by its language, and by the ethnic diversity of its population, all of which contribute to its cultural distinctiveness. Yet, the architecture of twentieth-century Brazil is all too often represented by the work of one man (Oscar Niemeyer) or by two cities (Rio de Janeiro and S&@227;o Paulo). This book is a study of Brazilian architecture in the twentieth-century, from the first modern houses of the 1920s and Le Corbusier&@8217;s seminal visits to the country, through the well-known &@8216;heroic&@8217; period of the 1940s-1950s and its crisis post-1964 up to contemporary developments. The high-modernist era coincided with the period of Brazil&@8217;s most rapid economic growth around the middle of the century, when the country was transformed from a predominantly agricultural economy with coffee as its principal export, into an urbanised society with an industrial economy that saw the creation of Brasilia, one of the most utopian projects of the Modern Movement. Towards the end of this period, as society became increasingly polarised between a prosperous middle class and a very poor underclass, architects also became more pre-occupied with the nature of public buildings and the problems linked to accelerated urban growth. What has usually been seen as a period of creative experimentation in architecture underwent a crisis with the advent of the military dictatorship in 1964, while the rapid growth of the economy was sustained and even increased, with the consequent rise in activity of the building industry until the 1980s, one of the inherent contradictions of Brazil that this book seeks to address. While conventional accounts treat 1964 as the end of Brazilian architecture, this was not the case. Brazilian architects adapted to the changed circumstances, and developed new strategies that were no less creative, but sometimes less demonstrative. This has been particularly so since the restoration of democracy in the early 1980s, and again, a major theme of the book is to show continuities between the more recent work and that of the high-modernist era of the mid-century. The book will be edited by Elisabetta Andreoli and Adrian Forty, who will frame the main chapters with the introduction and a foreword to the survey of recent works. ... Leer resumen completo

In this gorgeous book of images, photographer Herve Champollion portrays these ancient stones in natural light, creating a breathtaking pictorial history of one of the world's most fascinating ancient civilizations. Virtually all that is known of pharaonic times - from military campaigns to religious ceremonies to the everyday life of civilians - comes from these stones, which are captured by Champollion's lens in a range of settings, from the glowing red of sunrise, to the hard white light of midday, to the golden rays of sunset. Informative captions by noted scholar Diane Sarofim Harle enhance the images and help us to appreciate the grandeur of these "stones of light," which, through the ages, have beckoned visitors to come face to face with the divine. ... CHINA TO CHINATOWN: CHINESE FOOD IN THE WEST
REAKTION BOOKS, 2004

Resumen del libro

Globalities S. "China to Chinatown" tells the story of one of the most notable examples of the globalization of food: the spread of Chinese recipes, ingredients and cooking styles to the Western world. Beginning with the accounts of Marco Polo and Franciscan friars who travelled to the East, J.A.G. Roberts describes how Wes terners' first impressions of Chinese food were decidedly mixed, with many regarding Chinese eating habits as repugnant. Chinese food was brought back to the West merely as a curiosity. The Western encounter with a wider variety of Chinese cuisine dates from the first half of the 20th century, when more extensive travel became possible. The author describes the spread of Chinese food to the West with emigrant Chinese communities and the relatively recent phenomenon of Chinese restaurants. He also evaluates its position in relation to other cooking styles, such as Indian, Mexican and Japanese, in the process showing how Chinese cooking has come to be regarded by some as among the world's most sophisticated cuisines, and yet is harshly criticized by others, for example on the grounds that its preparation involves cruelty to animals., The author concludes by examining the extent to which Chinese food, as a facet of Chinese culture overseas, has remained differentiated and questions whether its ethnic identity is dissolving. Written in a lively style, the book should appeal to food historians and specialists in Chinese culture, as well as to a wide general audience interested in Chinese cuisine. ... James Cook) and influential cartographers. FIRE AND WATER: THE ART OF INCENDIARY AND AQUATIC WARFARE IN CHIN A
MEI-CHUN LEE SAWYER y RALPH D. SAWYER
WESTVIEW PRESS, 2004

Resumen del libro

China's official histories are replete with intriguing examples of incendiary and aquatic warfare being employed (particularly by the outnumbered) in pivotal roles to turn the tide of battle. In his new book "Fire and Water," best-selling author Ralph Sawyer traces the dynamic evolution and development of incendiary warfare in ancient China, from antiquity through the introduction of true gunpowder weapons, including cannon and muskets. Discussing both use and techniques, the book similarly unfolds the evolution of aquatic methodology, emphasizing the strong interconnection between the two with the inception of riverine combat. Fundamentally based upon an examination of the Chinese military writings, Sawyer examines and recounts the most important clashes and epochal conflicts in which these dramatic tactics were employed over the centuries. Although not a naval history, Sawyer does examine the extensive employment of incendiary attacks in naval conflict and explores the means for overcoming riverine obstacles, such as floating bridges. ... MADAME DE STAEL
MARIA FAIRWEATHER
ROBINSON PUBLISHING LTD., 2004

Resumen del libro

"At Madame de Stael's this evening I meet the world," wrote early American statesman Gouverneur Morris, and British biographer Fairweather's expansive biography of Germaine de Staël (1766–1817) rightly focuses on the salon as backdrop to French literary and political intrigues of the 18th and 19th centuries. The salons—where the great men of politics and culture gathered during and after the ancien régime—were often a woman's only avenue of influence, and Mme. de Staël's gatherings included the most brilliant politicians, writers and artists of her day, including Chateaubriand, Talleyrand and Lafayette. Fairweather digs deep into de Staël's past to contextualize her rise from daughter of a self-made Swiss banker, a former finance minister to Louis XVI, and a Protestant governess whom he married, to author and hostess of one of Paris's leading salons. The result is a complicated portrait of a passionate woman well versed in Enlightenment philosophy, German literature and Calvinism, whose outspokenness pitted her against France's extreme factions—the royalists, the Jacobins—and eventually Napoleon, leading to her exile in Geneva. But this did not deter her from challenging France's leaders from afar or continuing her fruitful literary life. Fairweather (The Pilgrim Princess) offers an extensively researched history; however, only dedicated students of French culture and literature may have the fortitude to wade into this almost over-rich tome. MURDER IN TOMBSTONE: THE FORGOTTEN TRIAL OF WYATT EARP
STEVEN LUBET
YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 2004

Resumen del libro

The gunfight at the OK Corral occupies a unique place in American history. Although the event itself lasted less than a minute, it became the basis for countless stories about the Wild West. At the time of the gunfight, however, Wyatt Earp was not universally acclaimed as a hero. Among the people who knew him best in Tombst one, Arizona, many considered him a renegade and murderer. This book tells the nearly unknown story of the prosecution of Wyatt Earp, his brothers, and Doc Holiday following the famous gunfight. To the prosecutors, the Earps and Holiday were wanton killers. According to the defense, the Earps were steadfast heroes—willing to risk their lives on the mean streets of Tombstone for the sake of order. The case against the Earps, with its dueling narratives of brutality and justification, played out themes of betrayal, revenge, and even adultery. Attorney Thomas Fitch, one of the era’s finest advocates, ultimately managed—against considerable odds—to save Earp from the gallows. But the case could easily have ended in a conviction, and Wyatt Earp would have been hanged or imprisoned, not celebrated as an American icon. Steven Lubet is professor of law at Northwestern University, where he is the director of the Program on Advocacy and Professionalism. He is the author of numerous books on legal strategy and trial advocacy. ... Leer resumen completo

AMERICA RIGHT OR WRONG: AN ANATOMY OF AMERICAN NATIONALISM
ANATOL LIEVEN
HARPERCOLLINS PUB., 2004

Resumen del libro

Anatol LievenA controversial and timely exploration of the dark side of American idealism -- and its potentially dangerous consequences for the world. In this thoughtful critique of America's role in the world, Lieven contends that U.S. foreign policy since 9/11 has been shaped by the special character of its national identity, which embraces two contradictory features. The first, a civic nationalism or 'creed' which espouses liberty and democracy, sometimes irrespective of the needs and desires of others. The other feature, Jacksonian nationalism, has its roots in the defensive White America, and is fed by a profound pessimism and a sense of personal, social, religious, and sectional defeat. Lieven examines how these two opposing impulses have played out in recent US policy and suggests that, in the Middle East in particular, the uneasy combination of policies has gravely undermined U.S. credibility and complicated the war against terrorism. It has never been more vital that we examine the way in which America thinks about itself. Drawing comparisons with earlier European models, he offers powerful insights into alarming elements of the American psyche and their disturbing implications for the coming century. This hard-hitting study directs a spotlight on the American political soul and on the curious mixture of chauvinism and idealism that has been exploited by the Bush administration. ... THE LIGHTS THAT FAILED: EUROPEAN INTERNATIONAL HISTORY 1919-1933
ZARA STEINER
OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS, 2005

Resumen del libro

The peace treaties represented an almost impossible attempt to solve the problems caused by a murderous world war. In The Lights that Failed: European International History 1919-1933, part of the Oxford History of Modern Europe series, Steiner challenges the common assumption that the Treaty of Versailles led to the opening of a second European war. In a radically original way, this book characterizes the 1920s not as a frustrated prelude to a second global conflict but as a fascinating decade in its own right, when politicians and diplomats strove to re-assemble a viable European order. Steiner examines the efforts that failed but also those which gave hope for future promise, many of which are usually underestimated, if not ignored. She shows that an equilibrium was achieved, attained between a partial American withdrawal from Europe and the self-imposed constraints which the Soviet system imposed on exporting revolution. The stabilization painfully achieved in Europe reached it fragile limits after 1925, even prior to the financial crises that engulfed the continent. The hinge years between the great crash of 1929 and Hitler's achievement of power in 1933 devastatingly altered the balance between nationalism and internationalism. This wide-ranging study helps us grasp the decisive stages in this process. In a second volume, The Triumph of the Night , Steiner will examine the immediate lead up to the Second World War and its early years. ...indisputably the most detailed and authoritative single-volume account of European international history in the fifteen years following the end of the Frist World War...[this work] affirms Zara Steiner's status as the pre-eminent historian of inter-war international affairs. Martin Conway, EHR 494 Zara Steiner has produced a splendid volume, chock full of detail and with many thought-provoking insights. It will remain a classic for many years to come. For those studying international business history it will serve as an excellent background reference manual to the period... If one were to ask for more it would be the second volume in the same vein. Derek H. Aldcroft, Business History Zara Steiner's work has ensured that we will have to treat that neglected decade [the 1920s] with proper respect. She has told the story with impeccable scholarship, clarity and compassion ... Her book will rightly become the definitive work on the period. Margaret MacMillan, TLS ... Leer resumen completo

WALSINGHAM: ELIZABETHAN SPYMASTER & STATESMAN
ALAN HAYNES
ALAN SUTTON PUBLISHING, 2004

Resumen del libro

Walsingham, Elizabeth's spymaster had established the most extensive spy network the world had ever seen, placing secret agents throughout Europe, especially in the Catholic courts of Spain, Italy, and France, to ferret out Catholic plots against Elizabeth. He took an active part in the persecution of Catholics and, with th e backing of William Cecil, entered Parliament in 1563. Joining the Privy Council in 1573, he was knighted in 1577. The ousted Catholics championed Mary Queen Scots. Fearful of an uprising, Elizabeth offered Mary sanctuary against the Scottish reformers and then betrayed and imprisoned her. She then plotted with Walsingham to compromise Mary. Through his talented spies Walsingham built a case against Mary through her letters - which are suspected now to have been forged by Walsingham himself - and which eventually brought about a death warrant for Mary from Elizabeth. He later discovered information about the attack of the Spanish Armada - which was sent by an outraged King Philip of Spain who accused Elizabeth of regicide. Yet in later years, Elizabeth all but ignored her spymaster.Walsingham, distrusted for being too powerful and having information that might ... Leer resumen completo

TO BEFRIEND AN EMPEROR: MEMOIRS OF NAPOLEON ON ST.HELENA
BETSY BALCOMBE
RAVENHALL BOOKS, 2005

Resumen del libro

Young Elizabeth Balcombe, or Betsy to friends and family, found life on the remote island of St Helena intolerably dull. Most fourteen-year-olds would. Her father had been posted to that unforgiving station in the Atlantic and, being a family man, he took his family with him. More... Life was bleak in Balcombe's bungalow on the fringe of James Town. But then, in October 1815, the situation was transformed by the arrival of an unusual visitor. Napoleon Bonaparte, one-time master of Europe, now prisoner and exile, stepped ashore. The Balcombes, like all the islanders, were amazed. And even more so when Napoleon, taking a fancy to their bungalow (the Briars) moved in with them. Betsy, overcoming her surprise at sharing her home with an emperor, delighted in his company and the two became firm friends. Miss Betsy Balcombe made the most of her time with the world's most famous prisoner, keenly observing all around her, noting down conversations, recording moods. The result is a unique set of memoirs which records in astonishing detail an almost unbelievable story. That of how a precocious teenager and an emperor talked, argued, played, confided and teased their way through grim years of exile on the barren rock of St Helena.
