BATAVIA S GRAVEYARD
Fecha Lanzamiento: 14/04/2005
PHOENIX (ORION), 2005

Resumen del libro

When the Dutch East Indiaman Batavia struck an uncharted reef off the new continent of Australia on her maiden voyage in 1629, 332 men, women and children were on board. While some headed off in a lifeboat to seek help, 250 of the survivors ended up on a tiny coral island less than half a mile long. A band of mutineers, who se motives were almost beyond comprehension, then started on a cold-blooded killing spree, leaving less than 80 people alive when the rescue boat arrived three months later. BATAVIA'S GRAVEYARD tells this strange story as a gripping narrative structured around three strong principal characters: Francisco Pelsaert, the cultivated but weak-willed captain; Jeronimus Cornelisz, a sinister apothecary with a terrifying personal philosophy influenced by Rosicrucianism who set himself up as the ruler of the island; and Wiebbe Hayes, the only survivor with the courage to fight Jeronimus's band. The background to these events, including the story of the Dutch East India Company, and the discovery of Australia, is richly drawn. ... Leer resumen completo

NORTHANGER ABBEY
DOVER, 2000

Resumen del libro

NORTHANGER ABBEY is about a naïve young woman whose head is full of the Gothic novels she consumes, and who begins to imagine that life may well be even stranger than fiction. Catherine Morland makes a touching, if somewhat charmingly brainless, heroine; Henry Tilney is a self-possessed and witty hero; and the plot dev ice in which Catherine sees General Tilney as a black-hearted villain out of a Gothic romance is ingenious and engrossing. In fact, this early work is full of sustained and sparkling inventiveness, and exhibits the sharp and accurate social observations of Austen's more mature fiction. ... Leer resumen completo

THE LANGUAGE OF STONES
HARPERCOLLINS PUB., 2005

Resumen del libro

A rich and evocative tale set in a mythic 15th−century Britain‚ to rival the work of Bernard Cornwell. The Realm is poised for war. Hal‚ its weak king‚ is dominated by his wife and her lover. Against them stand Duke Richard of Ebor and his allies; the two sides are on a bloody collision course. Gwydi on is watching over the Realm. Here when Arthur rode to war − they called him ′Merlyn′ then − he has walked the land since before the time of the druids‚ since before the Slavers came to subdue the people. The Realm is a still−magical England‚ its by−ways populated by legendary beasts. It is a land criss−crossed by lines of power upon which standing stones have been set as a secret protection against invasion. A thousand years ago‚ the Slavers broke the power of the array‚ laid straight roads across the land‚ and built walled cities of shattered stone. The dangerous stones are awakening‚ and their unruly influence is calling men to battle. Unless Gwydion and his apprentice‚ Willand‚ can unearth them‚ the Realm will be plunged into a disastrous civil war. But their enemies include men‚ monsters and a sorcerer who is as powerful as Gwydion himself. ... Leer resumen completo

Resumen del libro

Byzantium, 1096. When a mysterious assassin looses his arrow at the emperor, he has more than a man in his sights; the keystone of a crumbling empire, he is the solitary figure holding its enemies in check. If he falls, then the mightiest power in Christendom will be torn apart. Aware of the stakes, the emperor hires Demetr ios Askiates, the unveiler of mysteries, to catch the would-be-killer. But Demetrios is entering an unknown world, a babbling cauldron of princes, slaves, mercenaries, pimps and eunuchs. From the depths of the slums to the golden towers of the palace, and from the sands of the hippodrome to the soaring domes of Ayia Sophia, he must edge his way through a glittering maze of treachery and deceit before time runs out. Nor are all the enemies within the city walls. With the Turks rampant across Asia, the emperor has sent to the west for mercenaries to reinforce his position. He gets more than he bargained for, however, when a great army, tens of thousands strong, appears before the gates. The first crusaders have arrived, intent on making their fortunes in war, and they have no allegiance to an empire they eye with jealousy and suspicion. As the armies of east and west confront each other, and the assassin creeps ever closer to his prey, Demetrios must untangle the golden web of intrigue which surrounds the emperor before the city - and the empire - are drowned in blood. ... LUCREZIA BORGIA
WATERBROOK PRESS, 2003

Resumen del libro

“A fascinating story, rich in detail. In every case, Faunce portrays [Lucrezia] believably, with wit and sensitivity.”--Library Journal Hundreds of years after her death, Lucrezia Borgia remains one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of history, accused of incest, of poisoning her rivals, and even of murd ering her own father. Born into scandal, she was the daughter of the treacherous Cardinal Roderigo Borgia, who would later be crowned Pope Alexander VI. When her father ascended the papal throne, young Lucrezia’s life changed forever. From then on, Lucrezia would be unable to escape the political ambitions of her father and her brother, the bloodthirsty Cesare Borgia. In an era when the Vatican was as decadent and violent as any royal court, Lucrezia was its crown princess. Famed for her beauty, she was a valuable pawn in the marriage game, and Alexander VI would use her to create one alliance after another. When her kindly first husband no longer suited the Pope’s needs, Lucrezia’s virginity was restored by papal decree (her new maidenhood was declared “miraculous”), and she was married off again, this time to a man she truly loved, Alfonso, Prince of Naples. But her joy was short-lived. Alfonso loathed her brother and refused to participate in the Pope’s imperial schemes, which threatened to tear apart the Vatican’s political alliances--and Lucrezia’s happy marriage. (...) ... PILLARS OF THE EARTH TV TIE-IN FA
PAN BOOKS LTD, 2010

Resumen del libro

Tom Builder's dream is to build a cathedral, but in the meantime, he must scrounge about to find a lord that will hire him. His search pulls him and his family into the politics of 12th-century England, as different lords vie to gain control of the throne in the wake of the recently deceased king. Prior Phillip, a man raise d in the monastery since childhood, also finds himself drafted into the brewing storm as he must protect the interests of a declining church. Richard E. Grant seduces readers early on with a soft and deliberate voice that is like a loud whisper. However, his full range quickly reveals itself as he delves into characters with animated voices that exert their true essence. Even throughout the narrative, Grant musters a lively voice that imbues energy into the story. The only shortcoming is that the abridgment of Follett's 1989 novel proves to be too choppy. Though the story appears complete, there still remain abrupt moments throughout the tale. Penguin Audio's unabridged version is read by John Lee and runs 41 hours ... Leer resumen completo

Hardy's novel begins with the famous scene in which Michael Henchard, a young farmer, gets drunk at a village fair and sells his wife and baby daughter to a passing sailor for five guineas. The consequences of this impulsive act are regrettable and far-reaching, and culminate in Henchard's ruin and his death in obscurity as a lonely old man. Henchard is similar to the heroes of Greek tragedies who destroy themselves through weaknesses in their own character. (The subtitle of the novel is "The Life and Death of a Man of Character.") ... Ten years after the Battle of Camlann, in which Arthur was slain, Budoc the hermit waits for death in the Sacred Wood, his world crumbling into darkness. Raiders roam the coasts of Britain in wolf packs, burning crops and slaughtering villagers. Among them is an Irish war party in search of a magical chalice, accompanied by a witch doctor. Thirty years before, after his great victory at Mount Badon, Arthur had sailed north to the mist-shrouded Western Isles, taking with him a select band of warriors. There he won possession of the chalice and was declared emperor of Albion. Now, as the flame of civilization dims and the hordes rush in on Britain from all sides, Budoc and a ragtag band consisting of two warriors, a captured Saxon boy, and a village girl must rely on the powers of the Sacred Wood and the martial arts of Arthur's companions to save themselves and Arthur's dream of Albion.
