In "The Broken Mirror," Chimezie B. Ihekuna delivers a haunting family saga that explores the jagged aftermath of a domestic explosion. The story begins with a marriage in ruins: Bode, a once-successful medical officer, and Cynthia, an accountant, find their love transformed into a "cat and dog" existence of resentment and violence. When a corporate conspiracy at St. Andrews Hospital costs Bode his career and his dignity, his frustration boils over, leading to a brutal altercation that sends Cynthia to the hospital and the couple to the divorce court.
The judicial verdict does more than separate two adults; it shatters the world of their five-year-old identical twin daughters, Shade and Joke. In a fateful split, Shade remains with Bode in Lagos, while Cynthia takes Joke to the distant city of Calabar. This separation becomes the "bedrock" of a lifelong tragedy. While Shade is raised in the warmth of her fathers favour and eventually his restored wealth, she is fed a devastating lie: that her mother and sister are dead. Conversely, Joke is forged in the furnace of Cynthias poverty and terminal illness, growing up with a heart hardened by the belief that her father and sister abandoned them to rot.
Decades later, the "broken mirror" reflects a terrifying new reality. As Shade prepares for a life of happiness with her soulmate, Emeka, the vengeful ghost of her past—the twin she never knew was alive—emerges from the shadows. Aided by a treacherous corporate informant, Esther, Joke orchestrates a cold-blooded scheme of impersonation and abduction. On the eve of Shades wedding, the switch is made. Joke steps into Shades life, her shoes, and her marriage, determined to claim the "pound of flesh" she believes she is owed.
What follows is a breathless descent into a heart-stopping climax in Calabar. When the real Shade finally escapes her captors to confront her reflection, the shock triggers a fatal cardiac arrest, leaving Emeka trapped in a nightmare with a woman who wears his wifes face but possesses a killers soul.
Documented by their childhood friend Raheem, who provides the account from a hidden recording device, "The Broken Mirror" is a visceral cautionary tale. It serves as a stark reminder that the children often inherit the wounds of a parents divorce, and that a house built on lies will eventually crumble, burying the innocent and the guilty alike. This is not just a story of a failed marriage; it is a gripping exploration of identity, vengeance, and the inescapable ripples of a shattered home.
