Este ensayo de la poeta argentina María Negroni es un archivo particular de fetiches y obsesiones, y tambien un itinerario por los rincones mas exquisitos e intransitados de nuestro universo cultural. Bajo su mirada lirica y lucida, por orden alfabetico, como si el mundo fantastico pudiera ordenarse, se suceden mas de ochenta textos breves sobre castillos, catalogos, gabinetes de curiosidades, dobles, muñecas automaticas, maquinas solteras, Athanasius Kircher, Baudelaire, Joseph Cornell o el Dr. Caligari... objetos y sujetos abanderados de una causa comun.

En el año 1462 una nave de mercaderes valencianos cargada de muchos productos fue asaltada ante las costas de la actual Argelia por corsarios de Portugal. Nada nuevo: era habitual en el siglo XV este comportamiento de pirateria maritima entre paises. De vuelta en la capital valenciana su propietario y marineros, reclamaron ante las autoridades del Reino de Valencia que se exigiera una compensacion por las perdidas sufridas. Lo habitual era primero reclamar a las autoridades reales del pais atacante, Portugal, y si habia "silencio administrativo", se podia autorizar el embargo de bienes portugueses en Valencia o, como en este caso y despues de unos años de espera, la creacion de un impuesto especial a todos los productos de mercaderes de Portugal que llegara a la ciudad. Este es el origen y contenido del manuscrito que se edita ahora, asi como de alguna documentacion complementaria: los libros de registro de mercaderes, naves y productos comerciales portugueses que llegaron a Valencia a finales del siglo XV. Una fuente muy interesante sobre el volumen del trafico comercial, productos, mercaderes y navegantes de finales de la Edad Media entre ambos paises.

La monarquía tuvo un papel fundamental en el proceso de reconfiguración del liberalismo posrevolucionario en Europa. Lejos de desaparecer, consiguió mantenerse como una institución capital para la construccion del estado-nacion hasta los albores del siglo xx. Todo ello fue acompañado de una perdida del poder efectivo del monarca que acabo aceptando un desplazamiento que iba de lo politico a lo simbolico, asumiendo como propia la mediacion entre grupos sociales y la representacion ºltima de la unidad y de la moral nacionales. Este libro propone acercarse a un proceso cuyas dinamicas ofrecen muchas posibilidades de analisis por lo que se refiere al siglo xix, dinamicas que, a la vez, nos permiten entender las realidades de la primera mitad del siglo xx. En este trabajo se estudian cuestiones como el caracter simbolico del monarca en el proceso de nacionalizacion y las posibilidades que ofrecia su figura como encarnacion de la nacion a traves de mecanismos como los viajes reales o las devociones religiosas, tratando de dilucidar si tales estrategias alcanzaron el exito esperado o si, por el contrario, no consiguieron sus objetivos.
