Jason Matthews, oficial de la Dirección de Operaciones de la CIA, a lo largo de una carrera de treinta y tres años sirvió en múltiples destinos y se dedicó a la recogida clandestina de información de seguridad nacional, especializándose en operaciones en zonas inaccesibles. Matthews llevó a cabo operaciones de reclutamiento contra objetivos soviéticos de Europa Oriental, Asia Oriental, Oriente Próximo y el Caribe. Como jefe en varias estaciones de la CIA, colaboró con aliados extranjeros en operaciones contra el terrorismo. En 2014, su obra Gorrión Rojo ganó el Premio Edgar a la Mejor Primera Novela de un autor estadounidense. El escritor y crítico Art Taylor la elogió en The Washington Post al escribir que «no es solo un thriller de ritmo ágil, es una novela de primer nivel, notable tanto por su rico estilo como por su apasionante descripción de un mundo secreto». Fue adaptada en la película del mismo título protagonizada por Jennifer Lawrence, que también logró un gran éxito. En 2015 y 2018 Matthews publicó El palacio de la traición (Almuzara, 2023) y El candidato del Kremlin (Almuzara, 2024), que completan la trilogía. Su autor falleció el 28 de abril de 2021 a causa de una afección poco frecuente, una degeneración corticobasal.
