Wilfred Owen was a Shropshire lad, born in Oswestry. He is regarded by many to have been the greatest British poet of the Twentieth Century despite living only to the age of twenty-five. Certainly, he is considered the best of the war poets, and there is no denying that what makes his poetry so powerful is his ability to combine the elegiac form with a deep-felt love for his subjects. His horror at seeing what bullets and shrapnel can do to a beautiful male body is made powerful in his verse precisely by his attention to the body. His mentioning of specific body parts is effective, as is his personification of the machinery of war. He writes of bullet-heads that "long to muzzle in the hearts of lads," and of "a boys murdered mouth," and "hearts made great by shot." In doing so, the outrage of war intermingles with eroticism to produce a powerful emotion in the reader.

Wilfred Edward Salter Owen va néixer el 18 de març de 1893 a Oswestry, Anglaterra. Juntament amb Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves i Rupert Brooke, formen el nucli principal del grup de poetes conegut com The War Poets. Acabats els estudis, va fer un any de mestre assistent del reverend Herbert Wigan i el 1913 es va traslladar a Bordeus, on va treballar de professor d’anglès a l’acadèmia Berlitz. El 1915 va tornar a Anglaterra i es va allistar a l’Artists Rifles. El 1916 és destinat al Regiment de Manchester i va al front a principis de gener del 1917. Mesos més tard, va ser diagnosticat amb trastorn per estrès posttraumàtic i el van enviar a l’hospital psiquiàtric de Craiglockhart, a Edimburg. Allà va conèixer un altre poeta, Siegfried Sassoon, que el va introduir als cercles literaris anglesos i el va animar a continuar escrivint i a publicar els seus poemes. Però ja no va tenir temps de fer-ho. L’agost del 1918 va tornar al front de França i el 4 de novembre va morir mentre intentava travessar el canal del Sambre amb els seus homes.
