Forging Ahead
DANIEL JAMES BERTRAND
Sinopsis
Earth can be damaged or destroyed by forces from the sky: asteroids, meteors, and violent solar storms. Standing against them takes very large protection systems. Those systems take tools, and the tools take energy that can be captured, stored, and spent as work. Forging Ahead is the engineering case for building that industry where the raw materials are: on the Moon, in orbit, and on the asteroids themselves.
This is not a catalog of futuristic gadgets. It is a stacked industrial argument, built only on physics already demonstrated in laboratories, factories, and spacecraft. Each chapter hands mass, energy, force, or information to the next:
• Power first. Sunlight, flywheel "kinetic mass" batteries, and ammonia made, stored, and cracked when the panels are dark.
• Finding and reaching the ore. Assay from first principles (X-ray fluorescence, laser spectroscopy, neutrons), delta-v budgets, and solar-electric tugs.
• Working without "down." Anchors, harpoons, and closed force loops for machines on low-gravity rock.
• Process plant in space. An orbital solar smelter driven by focused sunlight, microwave chipping of asteroid rock, magnetic sorting and coil launchers, and permanent magnets made from asteroid iron-nickel without rare earths.
• The Recombinator. A self-building lunar machine modeled on a healthy living cell that senses, feeds, manufactures, recycles, and signals its peers.
• Moving mountains of ore. A tow-and-sling system and timed surface emitters that "give an asteroid english" to capture mineral-rich bodies and redirect them, plus an orbital assembly yard fed by seed kits from Earth.
• Protection at scale. Communication across the forge, replenishment and urgency, and the deflection swarms, sentinels, and shields the whole chain exists to build.
Every major machine comes with a working plan: parts, joints, power budget, timed motions, sensors, and failure modes. Sixteen figures show how the pieces fit. An appendix turns the plans into build notes for the Unity game engine, so readers can simulate the machines themselves. What is proven and what is speculative is marked plainly throughout.
For engineers, students, space-industry enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to see how the path from sunlight to planetary defense could actually be built, one honest machine at a time.
