Stephen Nachmanovitch nació en 1950 y se graduó en 1971 en Harvard y cuatro años más tarde en la Universidad de California, donde se doctoró en Historia de la Conciencia, con una tesis sobre William Blake. Su mentor fue el antropólogo y filósofo Gregory Bateson. Docente y conferencista sobre creatividad, los puntales espirituales del arte y la ecología de la mente, en la década de 1970 fue un pionero de la improvisación en violín, viola y violín eléctrico. Ha impartido clases magistrales y talleres en innumerables conservatorios y universidades de todo el mundo, así como también ha participado de programas de radio, televisión, festivales teatrales y musicales. Ha colaborado con otros artistas de distintos ámbitos, incluidas la música, la danza, el teatro y el cine, y ha desarrollado programas que mezclan el arte, la música, la literatura y las tecnologías. Vive con su familia en Charlottesville, Virginia, y desde 1966 publica artículos en sus campos de interés y ha creado distintos softwares, incluido The World Music Menu y Visual Music Tone Painter. Es autor de Free Play (1990) y The Art of Is (2019), y actualmente actúa, graba, enseña y escribe.
