Sinopsis

"Yet God does not take away a life, but He devises ways that the banished one may not be cast out from Him." (2 Samuel 14:14)

When David heard that his son Amnon had violated his daughter Tamar, "he was furious," and he did nothing. Two years later Absalom had his brother killed and fled. David mourned for his son every day, but when Absalom finally came home, the king would not see his face. The breach grew into a revolt. David climbed the Mount of Olives barefoot and weeping, let a man curse him along the road, and commanded his generals, "Treat the young man Absalom gently for my sake." In the chamber over the gate at Mahanaim, he cried, "O my son Absalom!"

He Devises Ways is a 30-day devotional through the life of David for mothers and fathers whose grown children have stopped speaking to them, and for the spouses, friends, and churches who stand with them. Along the way youll follow Renee, a 58-year-old dental hygienist in the Texas Hill Country whose daughter Lucy sent one email in June, no contact and three reasons, one of them an uncle and a summer night when Lucy was fifteen, and Teo, a retired pecan grower whose own son did not speak to him for eleven years. Their year runs from a porch on Wednesday mornings through a hard look at the past, a report to the state, a grandchilds birth, a letter with no excuses, and a first, careful conversation, and their talks lead into each days Scripture, reflection, and practice.

What youll read:

- The King Was Furious: a father who mourned every day, a fury that did nothing, Nathans "You are that man," the son David never corrected, and two years of silence.

- The Banished One: a go-betweens script, "He devises ways," a homecoming without a welcome, Joabs barley field, and Hoseas "How could I give you up?"

- Weeping as He Went: hearts stolen at the gate, Ittai who stayed, the ark sent back, Shimeis curses, and a betrayal by a close friend.

- Treat the Young Man Gently: beds, basins, and cheese, a fathers plea for gentleness, a dry and weary land, "if it is possible on your part," and "O my son."

- Speak Comfort: "Get up," forgiveness without pretending, letting Ziba take it all, old Barzillai, and Rachel weeping for her children.

- An Everlasting Covenant: the ministry of reconciliation, quick to listen, sowing in tears, a blessing for a son, and Davids last words.

Inside the book:

- 30 days in six parts. Every day includes a passage from the Berean Standard Bible, a Mentor and Student conversation, a reflection, a practice, a one-line "At the Gate," a prayer, and three journal questions with room to write

- Honest and careful: it does not take sides against your child or promise a happy ending; it treats abuse as abuse, takes a grown childs boundaries seriously, and separates forgiveness from reconciliation and trust

- Back matter: a practical guide (crisis lines including 988 and the SAMHSA National Helpline, what to do when abuse is part of the story and how to report it, welfare checks, respecting a no-contact request, grandparents and the law, finding a counselor, and what research says about estrangement), a chapter for spouses, siblings, friends, and churches, background on Davids house, a six-session group guide (may be photocopied for your group), and a Scripture index

About 15-20 minutes a day.

Renee, Teo, and everyone in Kerrigan, Texas, are invented characters. This is a devotional, not legal, medical, or psychological advice, and not a substitute for a licensed counselor or your own doctor; it includes safety and crisis information (911, 988, the Childhelp hotline, and how to report abuse in the U.S.). Written with the assistance of AI writing tools, under the authors direction. Scripture quotations are from the Berean Standard Bible (public domain). Every Scripture quotation was checked word for word against its source.
