Marisol Tane buys abandoned storage units for a living, which means she knows grief has packing tape, bad handwriting, broken furniture, and a very specific order. At a Saturday auction at Tall Fir Self-Storage, owner Darla Madsen is found dead inside Unit 41 moments before bidding begins.
Marisols cousin Manny had argued with Darla and left his fingerprints on the unit door. Half the bidders have reasons to hate the victim. The other half mostly want to know whether Unit 41 is still going up for sale.
But Marisol notices something nobody else does: the unit was packed backward. The boxes were not abandoned over time. They were arranged from the front inward, staged for an audience after something was already inside. Someone built an abandoned life around a corpse, and Marisol has spent too many years sorting what people leave behind to mistake staging for loss.
