The Cold Within

We were taught to fear the howl of the blizzard and the beasts that scratch at the obsidian walls, but no one warned us that true winter doesnt break down doors: it sits beside you in the dining hall, speaks to you with the voice of your mentors, and watches you through your best friends eyes.

Surviving the solstice came at a price Thomas Candlewick still doesnt know how to pay. For twelve years, his skin was a numb wall incapable of feeling temperature; today, every degree of heat pierces his flesh like a thousand burning needles. As he tries to tame a golden flame that threatens to consume him from within, the iron and steam halls of Hearthforge Academy attempt to return to normal amid classes on thermo-hydraulics, brass gears, and the promise of the long-awaited winter dance.

But something came back broken from the holidays.

Deep in the Welsh mines, veins of blue ice are sprouting where only burning coal should be, and in the castle, the cold has stopped attacking with brute force to infiltrate minds instead. Arthur Pince no longer looks at the gears on the ceiling or trembles at the frost on the windows; his handwriting has grown rigid, his gaze gray, and his pulse hides a silence that freezes steel at the slightest touch.

Driven by desperation and supported by the unwavering loyalty—and emerald fire—of Elara Vane, Thomas must cross the lead gates of the forbidden library to unravel his mothers past, the secret of the Primordial Coal, and the truth about his own blood. To save his friend without destroying him, he will have to forget the violence of combustion and master an art reserved for the few: resonance, the ability to hear the hidden heartbeat of metal and delve into the most intimate memories of another living being.

Because when the pipes fail and betrayal hides behind those who swore to protect the Mother Flame, burning is no longer enough. You must dare to listen to the void before the cold settles into your guts forever.
