Maeve Brennan (Dublín, 1917 - Nueva York, 1993) nació en el seno de una familia irlandesa, católica, romántica y activamente nacionalista. En 1934, su padre fue nombrado primer embajador de Irlanda en Estados Unidos, lo que llevó a toda la familia a trasladarse a Washington. Cuando regresaron a Dublín, Brennan decidió quedarse en Estados Unidos y se mudó a Manhattan. Fue colaboradora de «Harper's Bazaar» y «The New Yorker». En esta última, publicó una serie de magníficas crónicas urbanas bajo el pseudónimo de «The Long-Winded Lady», las cuales se recopilan en el presente libro.
