The Steps Between Us

An evocative, unsentimental love story set across four days and twenty years. For fans of André Aciman, Olivia Laing, or the Before Sunset trilogy.
In a large house in a country which has changed its size and name so many times in the last hundred years it has lost its identity, a woman is packing half a million dollars in hundred-dollar bills into a suitcase when the men in uniforms arrive. Among them is a stranger from another world entirely. He says he is a journalist. He says he is there to meet her father. He says a great many things.
The woman is as guarded as the estate she resides in, but she is both intrigued by and attracted to the mysterious journalist. During his short stay the two have four memorable encounters. And as years go by and circumstances change, they will find their lives unexpectedly interwoven.
This is the story of two people from very different worlds. A story of power and money. A story of ordinary people faced with extraordinary choices. But above all, it is a story about love.
