The Threshold Below

THE THRESHOLD BELOW
Book One of The Dungeon Below the World

Every town has its Dungeon. Every nineteen-year-old walks toward one eventually. Almost no one talks about what it actually costs to come back out.

In the farming town of Xarath, the Hollow has sat at the edge of the fields for longer than anyone can account for — a wound in the land the whole town learned, generations ago, not to look at directly. Two hundred miles north, in the walled city of Dravengate, the Deep does the same work with none of the Hollows patience: cold, self-rearranging, built by hands nobody remembers.

Both dungeons test the people who enter them — not just their strength, but the things theyve never said out loud, even to themselves. On the same morning, in two towns that have never had reason to think of each other, eight young people who didnt ask for any of this are about to find out exactly what that testing costs.

In Xarath, farmers son Kael Dawnmarch discovers his gift is an extension of the only coping mechanism hes ever had — the need to protect someone. Sharp-minded Senna finds herself bound to a cold, patient presence shes too afraid to properly question. Brynn learns the shape rising in her isnt a weapon so much as a second self. And Xandar, allergic to sitting still with a hard feeling, discovers the Hollow has no patience for his usual deflections. Together they become The Named — four people slowly running out of places to hide from each other, and from themselves.

In Dravengate, duelist Mira carries a family expectation shes never once said aloud. Oswin must finally trust a flame hes spent years afraid of. Aldane sees things the rest of her cohort cant — at a cost she doesnt yet understand. And quiet, exacting Dexan misses nothing, including the things his teammates are trying hardest not to show. They become The Reckoning, and they learn fast that the Deep does not ask twice.

This is a dungeon-crawl where the rooms are often more frightening than the monsters in them — because the rooms already know exactly what youre afraid to admit. A creature that doesnt attack so much as forget. A guardian made of compacted debt that genuinely believes fire is unfair. A chamber that will not open until someone finally says, out loud, the thing theyve spent years not saying. Power here isnt handed out on a level-up chart — its earned the hard way, one honest confession at a time.

And above both dungeons, watching, patient, only just now noticing: a name neither cohort has reckoned with yet.

The Threshold Below is dark fantasy with real teeth and real heart — two parallel casts, two dungeons built from entirely different kinds of dread, and a progression system that rewards truth over tactics. If you want power-ups that feel like characters finally admitting something rather than a stat block updating, this is your descent.

Nineteen years old, and the Dungeon has been waiting for them since before either of them could walk. Its patient. Its old. And it has just started keeping score of exactly how honest theyre willing to be to survive it.

The descent begins below.
