Entre 1890 y el comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial se desarrolló un nuevo estilo internacional en arquitectura y diseño. Siguiendo el ejemplo del movimiento Arts and Crafts inglés, los representantes del Art Nouveau se volvieron contra los excesos eclécticos del historicismo y les opusieron formas orgánicas, ornamentación vegetal y construcciones funcionales.
