Dick King-Smith nació en Gloucester (Inglaterra) en 1922, en una granja rodeado de animales y mascotas. Después de trabajar durante veinte años en una granja, regresó a la enseñanza. Más tarde empezó a escribir libros para niños. Esta tarea la inició en 1978 a la edad de 54 años y desde entonces no ha podido dejar de escribir. Desde que publicó su primer libro The Fox Busters ha publicado más de 60 títulos. El que más fama le ha dado ha sido Babe, el cerdito valiente, con el que recibió en 1984 el premio Guardians Children Fiction Award y que fue llevado además al cine en 1995. A King-Smith le encantan los animales como así lo reflejan sus títulos: Un ratón llamado lobo, El perro invisible, El ganso de oro o El caballo de agua, entre otros. En 1992 fue el autor más votado en la lista de autores de literatura infantil y se le ha considerado como el más firme sucesor de Roald Dahl.
