María Luisa Gefaell (1918-1978), de padre austriaco y madre española, nació en Madrid y realizó estudios superiores de música. Se especializó como concertista de instrumentos antiguos en Múnich. Desde muy joven se interesó por la literatura y colaboró con artículos en numerosas revistas. Comenzó a escribir para niños a raíz de las narraciones que inventaba para sus hijos. Estuvo casada con el poeta Luis Felipe Vivanco. En 1950 recibió el Premio Nacional de Literatura con una colección de cuentos infantiles.
