Wolfgang Bauer (1930-1997) fue profesor de Lenguas y Culturas de Asia Oriental en la Universidad de Múnich. Su renombre mundial le llevó en innumerables ocasiones como profesor invitado a Estados Unidos, Australia y Japón. Fue el primer profesor de estudios sobre China, en 1961, en Heidelberg e impartió clases en Múnich hasta 1966. Fue miembro de la Academia de Ciencias Bávara y recibió la Orden del Mérito de Alemania.
