As part of the major heritage interview program conducted in 2006 by the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) in collaboration with the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah, Roman Polanski recorded his account of his childhood in Poland during the war. It was while writing that he remembered asking his father, in 1973, to write his memoirs. He recently rediscovered his fathers account, which he had never read before. It now forms the second part of this unique book, Letters to My Son by Ryszard Polanski, bringing together a father and son in two moving and enlightening testimonies of historical memory.

Roman Polanski nació en París en 1933 y creció en Cracovia. Tras la ocupación alemana de la ciudad, fue separado de sus padres y sobrevivió mendigando en las calles del gueto judío. Finalmente, logró eludir la persecución nazi gracias a la protección de varias familias católicas, mientras que su madre murió en Auschwitz. Su primer largometraje, El cuchillo en el agua (1962), se rodó en Polonia; posteriormente, trabajó en Gran Bretaña, Estados Unidos, Italia y Francia. Ha dirigido veintidós películas de géneros y temas variados, entre ellas obras maestras como Repulsión, La semilla del diablo, Chinatown, Tess, El pianista y El escritor. En 1978, abandonó Estados Unidos para evitar una condena de cárcel por abuso sexual de una menor. Se ha casado tres veces y tiene dos hijos con su última esposa.
