Nació en 1940 en Niza. Fue profesor de literatura comparada en las universidades de Sussex y Oxford. Ha publicado catorce novelas, tres volúmenes de cuentos y varias obras de crítica y teoría cultural, entre las que destacan ¿Qué fue de la modernidad?, Confianza o sospecha (Turner) y El libro de Dios. Una respuesta a la Biblia (Herder). Ha sido finalista del Booker Prize y colabora habitualmente en The Times Literary Supplement.
