En 1985 gana el premio Pulitzer por su novela Lonesome Dove. Autor de veinticinco novelas, dos colecciones de ensayos, un texto autobiográfico y más de treinta guiones, McMurtry es más conocido por
las magistrales adaptaciones cinematográficas de algunas de sus novelas: en 1963 Hud protagonizada por Paul Newman y en 1971 The Last Picture Show, la obra maestra de Peter Bogdanovich. En 2006, McMurtry es galardonado con el Globo de Oro y el premio Oscar por el guión de Brokeback Mountain. Actualmente vive en Archer City, Texas
