THE 12 CAESARS (Annotated) | eBook

The 12 Caesars is Suetoniuss vivid collective biography of Romes rulers from Julius Caesar to Domitian, a work that fuses political history, court gossip, moral judgment, and antiquarian detail. Rather than constructing a continuous annalistic narrative, Suetonius arranges each life thematically—ancestry, public career, private habits, virtues, vices, omens, and death—creating portraits at once documentary and theatrical. Written in the early second century CE, it belongs to the Roman biographical tradition and offers an indispensable counterpart to Tacituss darker, more senatorial historiography. Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus was a Roman scholar, administrator, and man of letters who served under Trajan and Hadrian, including in posts that likely gave him access to imperial archives and correspondence. His interests in grammar, antiquities, and institutional memory shaped his method: he collected anecdotes, documents, sayings, and rumors not merely to entertain, but to reveal how character and power were thought to intersect in imperial Rome. This book is recommended to readers interested in Roman history, political biography, and the psychology of authority. Its mixture of scandal, ceremony, and sharp observation makes it both a foundational historical source and a compelling study of monarchys human consequences.
