The Aid Forms

In 1965, the Higher Education Act was signed into law, meaning to swing a door open for families without cash. The Aid Forms starts from how that door works in practice today: an ER nurse in Chicago who calmly manages trauma patients finds her hands shaking in front of the federal student aid portal.
The book follows the traps that derail ordinary families before they even reach a question about income: an auto mechanic in Phoenix locked out for a week after mistyping his password, a student whose account used a school email that expired after graduation, a father rejected because the system only recognizes the name on his Social Security card.
It walks through the math colleges bury inside a cheerful award letter, showing a nurses daughter two offers side by side: one universitys fifty-thousand-dollar price looks generous until the actual yearly gap comes to forty-four thousand five hundred dollars, while a plainer, unglamorous public school leaves a gap of only nineteen thousand five hundred.
