Sinopsis

The Gamekeeper at Home is a richly observed work of rural prose in which Richard Jefferies examines the daily world of the English gamekeeper: his duties, skills, domestic life, conflicts with poachers, and intimate knowledge of field, covert, and hedgerow. Combining natural history, social observation, and narrative vignette, the book belongs to the Victorian tradition of country writing while resisting mere pastoral nostalgia. Jefferies renders the countryside as a lived and contested environment, shaped by labour, law, class, sport, and ecological attention. Richard Jefferies, born in rural Wiltshire in 1848, drew deeply on firsthand acquaintance with farming communities, estate life, and the rhythms of the natural world. His journalism and essays often transformed local observation into literature, and The Gamekeeper at Home reflects both his reporters eye and his poetic sensitivity to landscape. Jefferiess sympathy for rural workers, coupled with his awareness of Victorian social change, gives the book unusual texture and authority. This volume is recommended to readers interested in nature writing, Victorian rural society, sporting history, and the literature of place. It rewards those who value precise observation and a humane intelligence attentive to both human custom and the nonhuman world.
