MARGARET OLIPHANT (Wallyford, 1828 - Wimbledon, 1897) Escritora e historiadora escocesa. Nacida en un ambiente que favorecía su interés por la escritura, experimentó desde niña con esta disciplina. Su vida personal estuvo marcada por la tragedia: tres de sus seis hijos murieron siendo niños y su esposo falleció de tuberculosis, siete años después de su matrimonio. Así fue como Oliphant se dedicó de lleno a la escritura para mantener a su familia. Colaboradora habitual de la prestigiosa Blackwood’s Magazine, revista en la que escribieran Edgar Alan Poe y Nathaniel Hawthorne, vio publicados en esta un centenar de artículos. Como novelista alcanzó tal popularidad que se llegó a decir que era la escritora favorita de la reina Victoria. Dejó un valioso legado tanto literario como crítico que perdura hasta la actualidad.
