Richard Adams grew up in Berkshire, the son of a country doctor. After an education at Oxford, he spent six years in the army and then went into the Civil Service. He originally began telling the story of Watership Down to his two daughters and they insisted he publish it as a book. It quickly became a huge success with both children and adults, and won the Guardian Childrens Fiction Award and the Carnegie Medal in 1972. Richard Adams has written many novels and short stories, including Shardik and The Plague Dogs.

Nació en Berkshire en 1920, y estudió historia en Bradfield y en el Worcester College de Oxford. En 1972 publicó su primera novela, La colina de Watership, que obtuvo la medalla Carnegie y el premio de literatura de The Guardian. Ha publicado siete novelas más, una autobiografía, el libro de relatos Los cuentos de la colina de Watership (Seix Barral, 1998) y, en colaboración con Ronald Lockley, Voyage Through the Antartic. También colaboró en la publicación de Nature Through the Seasons y de Nature Day and Night (con Max Hooper y David A. Goddard). Richard Adams vive en el sur de Inglaterra con su mujer Elizabeth, experta en historia de la cerámica inglesa.
