ATALA Y RENé

Atala y René presents two novellas by François-René de Chateaubriand, paired with selections from Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. Atala is a novella by François-René de Chateaubriand that first appeared in 1801. It tells the story of the tragic love between Atala, a Christian Native American woman, and Chactas, a Native American man. Set against the backdrop of the Louisiana wilderness, the novella explores themes of love, religion, and the clash of cultures. René is another novella by Chateaubriand, first published in 1802, and is an autobiographical story that delves into the ennui and disillusionment of a young man, René, as he grapples with existential questions and seeks solace in nature. These works are exemplary of early French Romanticism, displaying exotic settings and heightened emotionality. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
