Tras haber pasado por el programa de diseño de manga en la Kyushu Designer Gakuin, ya en el año 2006 presentó una versión corta del manga que se convertiría en un éxito mundial, “Ataque a los titanes”, al premio MGP de la revista “Grand Prix” de Kodansha, en el que obtuvo un premio menor a pesar de las críticas que recibió a su estilo. Sin embargo, esto no detuvo su ansia de publicar su obra y desde los 20 años, momento en que se mudó a Tokio, compaginó su trabajo en un cibercafé con su empeño en convertirse en mangaka, y gracias a esto, en 2008 presentó con éxito su manga “Heart Break One” al premio Freshman Manga de la revista “Weekly Shonen Jump”. Pero no fue hasta un año después, en 2009, que “Ataque a los titanes” vio la luz en la revista mensual “Bessatsu Shonen”. Desde entonces, esta obra ha conseguido numerosos premios y versiones tanto en forma de videojuego como de película.
