Die Barockzeit erstreckte sich von 1600 bis 1780 über ganz Europa. Beginnend mit italienischen Künstlern, die durch dynamische Kompositionen und ausgeprägte Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste das Drama in die Malerei brachten, wurde der Barock später von unzähligen Künstlern in ihre eigenen Länder exportiert, wo sich der neue Stil sehr unterschiedlich entwickelte. Mit seinen monumentalen Historiengemälden und prachtvollen Porträts, die dem souveränen Wunsch nach Prunk und der Demonstration weltlicher wie religiöser Macht entsprachen, stieg der Barock zum Stil der europäischen Hofkunst auf. Die jüngste Phase des Barock, das so genannte Rokoko, begann um 1720 und zeichnete sich durch ein gesteigertes Gefühl von Verspieltheit und Intimität aus.
