Cawood (history, Newman College of Higher Education, Birmingham) examines twentieth-century Britain through explanatory text, illustrations, tables, charts, and maps. He includes essay topics in a question-and-answer format, and exercises such as role-playing and analyzing extracts and source materials to hone history skills. He also gives students practice in writing essays and interpreting statistics. Although written for British students studying for the AS and A2-level exams, this textbook could also serve in undergraduate survey courses in modern British history.
