This book is an introduction to the creative literature written in the United Kingdom from the beginning of the Victorian era until the end of the Second World War. Its periodisation, structure and style are mostly conditioned by its educational purpose and by the type of readers it is primarily intended for, that is, advanced students of English as a foreign language who have had very little or no exposure to the British classics so far. It provides a concise and selective survey of authors and works within the fields of prose fiction and poetry, with a short historical introduction to each period as an aid to understanding how the different authors were a product of, and interacted with, their epochs. The transformation of culture, thought and society —and the corresponding reflection in literature— in the more than one hundred years under observation is so radical and profound that it would be impossible to understand our present age without a basic knowledge of it. The Victorian Age saw the climax of Britain as the world’s leading country, with all its economical, industrial, technological, financial, geographical, ideological or cultural implications. But this powerful empire entered the 20th century taking a decisive role in the two bloodiest wars in the history of the human kind, and henceforth the world would never be the same. L.P. Hartley defined the first half of the 20th as “the most changeful half a century in history”, and he was probably right (along, perhaps, with the 1st, A.D.). Only by being acquainted with its literature will we be in a position to begin to understand who we are, and what we (dis)believe, today.

(Santander, 1966). Se licenció en Filología Inglesa y en Filología Hispánica en la Universidad de Oviedo, y en 1994 obtuvo el doctorado en Filología Inglesa. En sus años estudiantiles participó en grupos de teatro, musicales y programas radiofónicos, y en 1989 fundó la revista literaria Pretexto, que dirigió durante cinco años. En la actualidad trabaja en la Universidad de La Rioja, donde imparte docencia desde 1994.
Como creador tiene en su haber el libro de relatos Hay cosas peores que la lluvia (Nobel, 1998), las novelas Calle Menor (Sial, 2004, finalista del I Certamen de Novela Tristana), Mientras ella sea clara (Valnera, 2011, Premio Gobierno de Cantabria al mejor libro editado en 2011), y Solo yo me salvo (Valnera, 2011), y los poemarios Más relinchos de luciérnagas (La Sirena del Pisueña, 2006) y Poeta en su tierra (La Sirena del Pisueña, 2006). Ha ganado diversos premios, como el de Poesía Ángel González en 1996, y sus relatos y poemas han sido incluidos en antologías y revistas nacionales.
Entre sus obras académicas figuran la monografía Personaje y caracterización en las novelas de Evelyn Waugh (Servicio de Publicaciones Univ. de La Rioja, 1997), y un libro sobre la repercusión literaria inglesa del camino jacobeo: Viajeros y peregrinos ingleses en el camino de Santiago riojano (I.E.R., 2006, con Maria Luisa Lázaro). Es autor de las ediciones críticas y traducciones de las novelas de Evelyn Waugh: Hombres en armas (Cátedra, 2003), Oficiales y caballeros (Cátedra, 2010), Rendición incondicional (Cátedra, 2011); y también ha traducido y prologado las obras de George Orwell Vagabundo en Paris y Londres (Menoscuarto, 2010), y de Evelyn Waugh Neutralia. La Europa Moderna de Scott-King (Menoscuarto, 2009) y Izad más banderas (RBA, 2012). Ha coeditado la colección de ensayos Waugh Without End (Peter Lang, 2005), y en breve aparecerá su estudio In the Picture: Fiction and Myth in Evelyn Waughs Sword of Honour (Rodopi, 2013).
En 1996 fundó la revista Fábula, de periodicidad semestral, que ha dirigido desde entonces hasta la actualidad. En 1995 fundó ASUR, asociación de voluntariado universitario que, entre otros proyectos, desarrolla una importante labor educativa entre niños de familias inmigrantes. En los últimos años viene coordinando talleres de crítica y creación literaria, por donde han pasado varios escritores españoles de prestigio.
