Nascuda al Berlín Oriental (RDA) el 1967, és escriptora i directora d'òpera. Va cursar estudis de teatre i de direcció musical. Als anys noranta va començar la seva carrera literària, i ha publicat tant novel·les com obres teatrals, traduïdes a més de vint llengües i guardonades amb uns trenta premis literaris a Alemanya i Europa, entre ells el Thomas Mann Preis, l'Independent Foreign Fiction Prize o el Premi Strega Europeu.
