Nacido en Boston, Massachusetts, Steve Fallon se licenció en Lenguas Modernas por la Universidad de Georgetown. Tras trabajar en un diario estadounidense y obtener un máster en periodismo, su fascinación por la "nueva" Asia lo llevó a Hong Kong, donde vivió una docena de años, trabajó en diversos medios e incluso montó su propia librería de viajes.
