NOTES ON IRON AND IRON ORES

Extracted From a Report Addressed to Sir William E. Logan, F. R. S., Late Director of the SurveyCarrying fuel. Duction, the fuel can be transported much farther than the ore. Charcoal is often carried from localities where wood is abundant, to blast-furnaces in the vicinity of mines, a distance of twenty or thirty leagues. This is done in part by water or by rail, but for the transport of the ores from regions not easily accessible at other times, sledges are much used in the winter, which becomes the most favorable season for getting both the charcoal and the ores to the furnaces, which are generally as near as possible to the mines. In some cases the ores are carried for distances of ten or more leagues but this is generally when there is a back-freight of iron or other materials.
