It will furnish material for the more careful study of the dialect and vindicate its character as a form of German speech, but beyond this it will afl ord better than anything else an insight into the life and character of the Pennsylvania Germans, their simplicity, their humor, their ehre common sense, and their deep feeling and piety. Of course the productions used here are of unequal value, but the reader will find the variety itself useful, and he will have no difficulty in deciding what is jingle and what is poetry, what is written for the sake of the dialect and what is the work of genius clothed in the artless form of conventional speech.
