"El origen de la pintura renacentista se encuentra en Italia. Con el retorno a la Antigüedad, se reavivó una visión del mundo que permitía al hombre determinar su propia existencia. En la pintura se desarrollaron nuevos temas pictóricos y una nueva forma de representación orientada hacia la realidad. Este naturalismo, por su parte, recibió una importante influencia de la pintura holandesa de alrededor de 1450. Con la transición del siglo XV al XVI, Roma sucedió a Florencia como centro del Renacimiento. Poco después, el nuevo estilo se irradia también a otros países europeos. En el norte de Europa, el Renacimiento se combina con las corrientes bajomedievales, que también sitúan la existencia terrenal en el centro de atención. Renacimiento muestra con más de 400 obras una panorámica de las pinturas más importantes del Renacimiento.

"Der Ursprung der Renaissance-Malerei liegt in Italien.
Mit der Rückkehr in die Antike wurde eine Weltsicht wiederbelebt, die es dem Menschen ermöglichte, seine eigene Existenz zu bestimmen. In der Malerei entwickelten sich neue Bildthemen sowie eine neue, an der Wirklichkeit orientierte Darstellungsweise. Dieser Naturalismus wurde seinerseits maßgeblich durch die niederländische Malerei ab etwa 1450 beeinflusst. Mit dem Übergang vom 15. zum 16. Jahrhundert folgte Rom auf Florenz als Zentrum der Renaissance. Kurze Zeit später strahlt der neue Stil auch auf andere europäische Länder aus. In Nordeuropa verband sich die Renaissance mit spätmittelalterlichen Strömungen, die auch das irdische Dasein in den Mittelpunkt stellten. Renaissance zeigt mit mehr als 400 Werken einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Gemälde der Renaissance."
