Tash Aw (Taipéi, Taiwan, 1971) creció en Malasia, país natal de sus padres, hijos a su vez de la inmigración china de principios del siglo XX. A los dieciocho años se trasladó al Reino Unido para estudiar Derecho en el Jesus College de la Universidad de Cambridge y en la Universidad de Warwick. Tras finalizar sus estudios, se instaló en Londres, donde reside actualmente dedicado a la escritura. Su primera novela, La fábrica de sedas (2005), fue preseleccionada para el Premio Man Booker 2005 y ganó el Premio Whitbread a la mejor novela revelación de 2005, entre otros. Tras la publicación de su segunda novela, Map of the Invisible World (2009), la revista Time elogió «la prosa descriptiva sin igual de Aw…, su inmensa inteligencia y su empatía». En 2013, su novela Five Star Billionaire fue preseleccionada para el Premio Man Booker de ese año. En 2016, publicó Extraños en el muelle, que fue finalista del Premio Los Angeles Times Book, al igual que We, the Survivors, publicado en 2019. El sur, su sexta novela (y primera parte de una futura tetralogía), fue finalista del Premio Booker 2025 y destacada como uno de los mejores libros de ficción del año por The New York Times y The Washington Post.
