Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was an English author born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. After a childhood injury left her with limited mobility, she was often required to travel by horse-drawn carriage, which gave her many opportunities to observe horses and the ways they were treated. These observations inspired her to write Black Beauty, one of the first English novels to be written from the perspective of an animal.
