1945 — The Elbe Crossing

April 1945. Germany is collapsing.
American armies have reached the Elbe. Berlin lies ahead. Soviet forces are fighting desperately toward the capital from the east. Between them stands a shattered German army with almost nothing left to stop either advance.
Historically, the Western Allies turned away.
In this story, they cross the river.
The decision triggers one of the most consequential races in modern history. American and British formations push east while Soviet commanders realize that the capital they expected to capture may fall into Western hands instead.
Berlin becomes the prize.
But the military race is only the beginning.
As the Western Allies advance through the collapsing Reich, German defenders make desperate last stands. Civilians flood the roads. Refugees attempt to escape the fighting. Concentration camps are liberated under altered circumstances. Allied commanders must confront the political consequences of occupying territory that had been expected to fall within the Soviet sphere.
Churchill sees an opportunity to reshape postwar Europe. Eisenhower faces an unprecedented strategic decision. Stalin responds with fury.
Every mile gained changes the map that will follow the war.
The question is no longer who will defeat Germany. That outcome is already certain.
The question is who will control Berlin, where the occupation boundaries will fall, and whether the political geography of the next half-century can be changed before peace arrives.
