Charming ... shows that not all books about Russian aristocrats have to be full of doom and nihilism- The Times, Books of the Year

On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol.

Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval.

I finally got around to this highly recommended book, but not sure if I hadn’t. There are undeniably charming passages—like the absurdity of the Bolsheviks removing the wine labels, or the funny game of 'Zut'—but ultimately, this felt like a very long fable that overstayed its welcome. The historical reality is softened too much for my taste (the Soviet repression feels cartoonish), and the plot relies on endless convenient coincidences to save the characters. I had real difficulty finishing the page count, which felt even more infinite than the stash of golden coins always within the main character's reach.

Me encantó. Las relaciones entre los personajes, lo que ocurre en Moscú a lo largo de los años, todo sin salir de un hotel. Muy agradable para leer.
