Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck (1862-1949) est un écrivain belge, francophone de Flandre. Il obtient le prix Nobel de littérature en 1911. Le Prix Nobel qui échoit à Maurice Maeterlinck en 1911 a une triple signification. Il couronne tout d'abord une oeuvre quadruple, faite qu'elle est de poésie, de théâtre, d'essai et de traduction. Il consacre ensuite l'esthétique symboliste. Il constitue enfin la première légitimation d'une littérature francophone extra-hexagonale. Mais c'est surtout sa réflexion sur la construction sociale du monde naturel qui vaut à Maeterlinck sa réputation de philosophe spiritualiste : il célèbre l'unicité de l'univers dans La vie des abeilles (1901), que complèteront plus tard La vie des termites (1926) et La vie des fourmis (1930).
