In the frozen halls of Berlin, Li Mei Xian is a masterpiece of restraint. At five-foot-one, she is a porcelain doll—quiet, brilliant, and perfectly managed by the obsessive Chen Haotian. To her family in Shanghai, she is an investment. To Chen, she is a possession. She hides her rebellion in the bottom of her suitcase: micro-bikinis and silk dresses meant for a sun she has never been allowed to feel.

Everything changes when a month-long research trip takes her to the raw, sun-drenched coast of Western Europe.

Away from the gray skies of Berlin, Mei Xian sheds her woolen coats and her inhibitions.
