Smiling On Cue

Belonging should feel like home. Mine never quite has. There is a particular kind of loneliness that lives inside fitting in. You show up, you laugh at the right moments, you offer the right reactions, and still something underneath stays untouched. The cost of belonging is often the quiet disappearance of the self within it.
This is not a book about becoming antisocial or learning to reject every group. It is about the slow recognition that performing on cue, dimming parts of yourself to keep the peace, can become so automatic that you forget what your own voice sounded like. The exhaustion is not from being around people. It is from never quite being seen.
Naming this exhaustion changes something. Not the people, not the room, but the way you begin to notice where you vanish. Being seen starts with recognizing that the mask was always borrowed. What feels like relief is often just the return of attention to the parts of you that learned to disappear.
