The Returned
The Restored: A Zombie Cure Story, #1
Sinopsis
Bryce Keller died once. Then the zombie outbreak brought his body back without him.
When a zombie cure restores Bryces mind, he wakes with memories no survivor should have to carry: the people his body hurt while he was gone, the trauma that followed him into death, and the knowledge that the world is no longer certain he counts as human.
Now one of the Restored, Bryce returns home to Oakhaven, North Carolina, where federal protections exist on paper but fear still rules in practice. Some see cured zombies as miracles. Others call them monsters, demons, or mistakes that should have stayed dead.
Bryce survived the zombie apocalypse. Now he has to survive being restored.
Then Tyler Vance, the boy Bryce loved long before the world ended, comes back into his life. Their bond forces Bryce to confront everything he once tried to bury: family wounds, religious shame, queer identity and faith, and a love he was taught was safer when hidden.
But Oakhaven is changing.
As local authorities and religious leaders turn suspicion into persecution, medicine becomes leverage, neighbors become informants, and Restored citizens are hunted for the crime of surviving. Bryce, Tyler, his sister Skye, and a growing circle of allies are pulled into a resistance where survival means more than staying alive. It means fighting for the right to be seen as people at all.
And the more Bryce refuses to hide, his past, his scars, his love, or what he has become, the more dangerous he becomes to those who built their power on fear.
In a world that found a cure for the zombie plague, hatred may be the one infection no medicine can fix.
The Returned is an emotionally intense post-apocalyptic zombie horror novel blending survival horror, dystopian fiction, gay romance, LGBTQ+ horror, queer identity and faith, trauma and healing, found family, and small-town North Carolina tension into a story about what it really means to come back from the dead.
This deliberately avoids spoiling the late-book developments while highlighting what the manuscript itself emphasizes: Bryce and Tylers enduring relationship, the fight over whether the Restored are still people, and Bryce learning that fear and shame do not define his worth.
