WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (Stratford-upon-Avon, 1564-1616) es, sin duda, el dramaturgo más famoso de toda la historia de la literatura occidental. Los datos sobre su biografía son algo confusos, pero se sabe que hacia 1592 se encontraba en Londres trabajando como dramaturgo y actor. De estos años datan sus primeras obras, entre las que destacan Ricardo III, La fierecilla domada y Trabajos de amor perdidos. En 1594, entró a formar parte de la nueva compañía Lord Chamberlain’s Men y, en apenas siete años, se calcula que nacieron unas diecisiete obras de su pluma, desde: tragedias, como Romeo y Julieta y Hamlet, hasta comedias, como El sueño de una noche de verano y Mucho ruido y pocas nueces pasando por obras históricas como Enrique IV, Enrique V y Julio César, además de la inclasificable El mercader de Venecia. Ya en los primeros años del siglo XVII, gracias a la estabilidad que le proporcionó el éxito, Shakespeare vivió una etapa de plenitud artística, en la que escribió Othello, El rey Lear y Macbeth. Durante la última década de su vida, alumbró sobre todo obras ambientadas en la Antigüedad clásica, como Antonio y Cleopatra, y Coriolano, además de la alegórica La tempestad.
