Sacred Estrangement is an excellent study of the ways different autobiographers have found for adopting and adapting a tradition of Christian conversion narrative for their own secular purposes. It is a valuable and most welcome contribution to thought about the nature of the autobiographical act. -James Olney, Louisiana State University Sacred Estrangement analyzes certain works by important American writers and thinkers in the context of the rhetoric of conversion. Such analysis is especially valuable because it provides a reliable index of the relationship between the self and larger communities.
