In Spiral of Silence: Epistle to the Church of Christ in Cameroon, Peter Wuteh Vakunta, Ph.D., delivers a scathing critique of the Christian Church in Cameroon, contending that its cowardly lethargy and sinful slumber have enabled widespread abuse of power and injustice within the nation. The author passionately argues that the Church’s silence, despite biblical mandates to speak truth and fight for the downtrodden, has contributed to Cameroon’s dysfunctional state. Drawing parallels to historical figures like Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Luther King Jr., Vakunta challenges Cameroonian clergy to abandon their apolitical stance, confront governmental atrocities, and actively champion human rights and justice, even at the cost of their lives. The book serves as a clarion call for the Church to fully embrace its God-mandated role as the conscience of society, urging it to speak out against corruption, tribalism, and the erosion of democratic principles that plague Cameroon.This book is like a jug of cold water thrown into the face of a dormant church. I found myself contending with Peter Wuteh Vakunta over some points, but I was struck with the uncanny parallels that he draws between the compliant churches in the United States of America and the Churches of Christ in Cameroon. If you are inclined to think that you might disagree with what he has to say, here is my challenge: read this book and ask yourself, ’where did Vakunta get it wrong?’ I think you will find that question more difficult to answer than you expect.
