In 1896, at least in the indus trial provinces, there was a material modification of the Liberal position. There were conferences with manufacturers and there were pledges against summary or revolutionary disturbance of industrial conditions. There was at least one other issue of commanding interest, while the Conservative Party was rent by internecine strife and enfeebled by a long lease of power. If the protectionist party was rejected it is less certain that Protection was condemned.
