Sinopsis

One Corner of Everyday Warmth in China is a collection of nineteen essays on Chinese food culture, containing around 42,000 characters in total.

Following the turning of the seasons and the rhythm of Chinas traditional solar terms, the author turns the humblest ingredients into writing to be read, savoured and remembered. The essays travel from table to table across the land: lotus root, crab and mooncake in the south; Dongguans lycheewood roast goose, the Changan "bigbowl" feast, spring bamboo shoots and lychees with a thousandyear history; Sichuans colddressed chicken and spicy sausage; the Hakka New Years Eve dinner, fried glutinous dumplings and the "Dragon Raises Its Head" banquet of western Guangdong; and spring tea, kapok blossoms, wild mountain greens, and the pot of jasmine tea shared with a father. Drawing on classical texts and folk custom, each piece traces where a dish came from, how it is made and what it means — yet it always stays close to the kitchen fire and to lived experience. These are essays about food; they are also essays about homesickness, family and the warmth of ordinary life.

Most importantly, every essay in this collection has already been published in China Food (Zhongguo Shipin), a nationallevel journal in China.

"Food is the first necessity of the people." Food is a language without borders and the warmest doorway into a culture. May this corner of everyday warmth cross mountains and seas to welcome readers from every country and every walk of life — men and women, young and old. Wherever you are, may you taste, between bowl and chopsticks, the richness of Chinese cuisine and a flavour that feels like your own.
