At Quill Salvage, two discarded cards fuse into Cinder, an unstable living card with behavior the Registry cannot neatly classify. For the first time, Tarin has a path forward. Broken utility stock, weak traits, and unwanted materials can become a custom build—if he can learn how to make the results stable, repeatable, and survivable.

But every successful proof raises the value of what Tarin is doing. Markets notice. Regulators want controlled tests. Institutional access comes with conditions. A bad experiment could cost Tarin his lawful path forward—or hurt the salvage business that gave him one when nobody else did.

And Cinder is not an obedient piece of equipment. It can hesitate, refuse, and force Tarin to decide whether progress matters more than the agency of the card he created.
